Boston Hidden Chinese Gem—Braised Offal & Grilled Fish Steal the Show

Heard mixed reviews about this spot, but friends said “order right, and it’s amazing.” They were right—our braised offal and grilled fish were perfect, no misses. Pro tip: Call a day ahead to reserve the offal or braised beef brisket (they usually make one or the other daily) and the fish. 🔥 Must-Order Dishes Braised Beef Offal with Radish ($22): 🥘 Worth the pre-order. Loaded with 4–5 types of offal: (braised pork intestines), tripe, tendon, and more—all clean-tasting, no gamey aftertaste. The intestines? Chef’s kiss—rich, fragrant, and perfectly seasoned with that deep, savory (braised sauce). Simmered with glass noodles and soft, flavorful radish, it’s hearty but not heavy. The red oil on top adds aroma, but the broth underneath is pure, umami-rich goodness. Grilled Fish ($48): 🐟 Their new menu item, and it’s a winner. The fish itself is small but fresh; the real star? The massive pile of toppings: wide noodles, bean sprouts, enoki mushrooms, wood ear, lotus root, potato slices, yuba… you name it. Slightly spicy (not sure if adjustable), with a bold, savory sauce that coats every ingredient. More satisfying than the version at (Yi Ma Yi La)—definitely order this. 🆓 The Free Extras Spicy Cold Noodles & Pig Ear: 🥢 Complimentary, and shockingly good. The noodles are sweet-spicy, the pig ear tender with a nice crunch, plus peanuts for texture. Easily a $10 dish elsewhere—such a generous touch. ✨ The Details Vibe: Friendly service—staff was helpful when we called to reserve, and even added lemon slices to our water (nice touch). Value: ~$28 per person (with tip) for huge portions—three people couldn’t finish two dishes. Cash gets 10% off (we forgot, oops). Location: Not super transit-friendly, but there’s parking out front. Bus 57 stops nearby, then a short walk. Hippopo started as a private kitchen, and it shows—solid skills, generous portions, and honest flavors. Hoping they keep this up. Definitely returning. 📍 Hippopo Kitchen 241 Market St, Boston, MA 02135 #BostonChineseFood #HiddenGems #ComfortEats
