California Highway 395 Autumn Tour π | Hot Creek
Hot Creek Geological Site is a massive volcanic basin! π The view from Brees Lookout offers a stunning panoramic vista of the Hot Creek valley set against the backdrop of the snowy Sierra Nevada mountains. βοΈποΈ This incredible landscape was formed by a volcanic eruption 700,000 years ago, which created 50 cubic miles of molten rock and caused the ground to sink hundreds of feet, forming the basin we see today. Water from the Sierra Nevada filters down through fractures in the earth's crust, gets heated by the molten rock below, and emerges as thermal springs! ππ₯ It's a truly powerful and mesmerizing sight. We set out from Los Angeles on the morning of 10/6/2025, heading north on the scenic Highway 395. ππ¨ We made a pit stop in Big Pine for lunch and explored a lovely bakery in Bishop. π₯ͺπ₯ Our initial plan was to visit McGee Creek Trailhead first, but by the time we reached the trail entrance around 4:30 PM, the light in the valley was already fading. So, we decided to head straight to our next destination: Hot Creek! The photos taken from Brees Lookout around 5:00 PM, just before sunset, were absolutely breathtakingβthe layered light over the creek and canyon was simply magical! β¨πΈ I've heard the sunset views from here are spectacular tooβhave any of you been lucky enough to witness it?
