The nation’s largest and longest-running Mexican Independence Day parade returns with music, food, and an astronaut Grand Marshal! East L.A. is about to light up with one of the city’s most vibrant celebrations – the 79th Annual Mexican Independence Day Parade & Festival! On Sunday, September 14, 2025 , thousands will gather along César E. Chávez Avenue to honor culture, community, and tradition. This year’s Grand Marshal is none other than astronaut José M. Hernández, bringing a stellar twist to a beloved local tradition that’s been uniting Angelenos for nearly a century. Who is Grand Marshal José M. Hernández? --------------------------------------- From migrant farmworker to space shuttle astronaut, José M. Hernández is a Mexican-American engineer and astronaut. He participated in the Space Shuttle mission STS-128 in August 2009 and also led the Materials and Processes branch at Johnson Space Center. His journey serves as an inspiration, as he currently acts as a Regent of the University of California, a role that shows his dedication to education and his community. Where will the parade take place? --------------------------------- The parade will take place along Cesar Chavez Avenue, starting at Mednik Avenue and ending at Gage Avenue. The celebration will continue on Mednik Avenue, between César Chávez Avenue and First Street, with music, entertainment, attractions, food, and fun for the whole family. The parade will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by the festival from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Parade attendees are recommended to arrive early to get their viewing spot on Cesar Chavez Ave. Where to park ------------- You may park in the East LA civic center parking lot for free, or where street parking is available. Public transport to the parade ------------------------------ The easiest way to get to the East L.A. Parade is to travel via the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system to the East LA Civic Center Station. It’s located at the intersection of 3rd Street and Mednik Avenue in East Los Angeles, California.
