Chinese Food in Johannesburg, South Africa šŸ‡æšŸ‡¦

After staying in Joburg for a while, I’ve tried several Chinese restaurants—here’s my rundown! Hong Yun LoušŸ² Cuisine: Cantonese Portions are huge, and the food tastes pretty authentic for overseas Chinese cuisine. Everything is made fresh—even the sago dessert (forgot to take pics). That’s rare since many places rely on pre-made dishes! Pro tip: Skip the char siu in the triple roast platter—it was memorably bad lol. Ding YuanšŸŒ¶ļø Cuisine: Sichuan Lots of dishes to choose from, and the flavors are solid. The Mao Xue Wang (spicy blood stew) had a great mix of ingredients. Bonus: There’s a small playground for kids! Meet ChongqingšŸ”„ This became my go-to spot—visited 4-5 times in a month! Proper Sichuan flavors, decent portions (not huge), and legit Chinese chefs (not always a given abroad). Their grilled meat dishes are also tasty. Ju Xiang Yuan🐟 Cuisine: Hunan Decent but forgettable. The chopped chili fish head (no pic, sorry) tasted like a pre-made dish—meh. Go La šŸ¢ The grilled fish was okay but got too salty as it cooked. Their BBQ is actually great—well-seasoned and hits the spot. Sometimes they have spicy crab (hit or miss—first time amazing, second time mediocre). Tan XunšŸ² Probably the worst hot pot I’ve ever had. The broth was bland as water—even dipping sauces couldn’t save it. Skip. Yao De 🄢 Better than the last one—at least the broth had flavor. But overall, nothing memorable. Unnamed Iron Pot Stew 🦢 Forgot the name, but a friend took me. My first iron pot stew… in Africa! The braised goose was decent, but the cornbread (not stuck to the pot, just served baked) was underwhelming. Shaanxi Noodle House šŸœ The owner/chef seems legit Shaanxi. Noodles are decent for Joburg, and the cold skin noodles (liangpi) are a kid favorite. The black staff even hand-pulls dough skillfully! Chuan Wei Ju šŸŒ¶ļøšŸŸ The hot pot fish (freshly killed!) was delicious. Also loved the garlic ribs—kids devoured two orders. Shun De Ren Jia🄟 In Chinatown. Weekend dim sum starts at 10 AM—try the pig’s trotter with ginger and sesame balls! Three Shades of Spring šŸ§‹ Mainly a bubble tea shop, but their snacks are good. The pork chop rice was great the first time (huge portion), but shrank on revisit. At least the meat wasn’t funky—unlike another local noodle spot’s weird pork. #SouthAfrica #Johannesburg #JoburgEats #ChineseFood #TravelSA
