I went to this restuarant for the first time with a group of friends afew days ago to celebrate my birthday. The place is really great, however there's just one MAJOR ISSUE that completely ruined my special day.
On the menu they have a "Durban Chicken Curry" option with Basmati rice. As a person who grew up in Durban, this really grabbed my attention and I HAD TO ORDER IT.
Did I not get the biggest dissapointment ever when the waitress came back with my meal! To my suprise the "Durban Chicken Curry" is basically a butter chicken curry that is very bland and has added uncooked stir-fry, that just ruins the whole meal.
I dont mean to be rude but everyone knows that a Durban curry IS KNOWN FOR BEING FLAVOURFUL & SPICY. For example , if you go to any spice shop and you buy a durban curry powder or a durban curry masala, It's pretty obvious that whatever you're buying is going to be HOT, FLAVOURFUL & SPICY. Other resturants that I've that I've ordered a 'Durban curry' from have always met that expectation of a flavourful & spicy curry. I expressed this to the waitress that was assisting us, that I was not happy with the meal and that as a person who is from Durban, I was mislead into ordering something that was not accurately titled or described on the menu and I would like to for her to assist in resolving this.
She seemed extremely annoyed and told me that there's absolutely nothing she can do and that I must just write a review on Google. Which is what brought me here today.
I am appealing to whoever can rectify this to kindly do so, as this place is really great and would like to come back with my friends again soon.
I really do not like the way the waiter handled the situation, she did not care at all and was dismissive. She should've given me the opportunity to order something else or ask the chef to 'spice up' the curry to a 'durban flavour'.
Please re-consider the title of this meal on your menu to avoid further...
Read moreI had an interesting time at Mike’s kitchen. Was out of power and had to find a place to work and eat near me. The waiter that welcomed me was really great and went out of his way to get me seated in a place of my comfort and near a plug point and was super chill and friendly. His approach was what I preferred, very attentive which is key for great service. The wheels fell off when a different waiter brought my food and even after reminding her that my order was missing a drink and that I had ordered a drink she never returned with it and I had to walk all the way down stairs mid meal to go fetch my drink. Another waiter brought the drink and then the original waiter came with the bill and finally a different waiter picked up my bill. I feel consistency with the assigned waiter could have made the dining experience more enjoyable especially because the first waiter was on the ball.
The food is A1 - this is by far the best burger I have ever had - I had the sun-kissed burger. I asked they remove the sun-dried tomatoes (it’s my preference). It was honestly amazing and the patty was done to perfection. I absolutely cannot fault the food. The fries were good and the onion rings too but I prefer to wash my food down as I eat so by the time I got the drink my fries were cold and I had to be somewhere so I couldn’t really extend my stay there and have them warm the food up. They are very generous and it’s evident in the portion sizes. The food was still amazing despite this waiter hiccup.
Loved the atmosphere. If I didn’t need to work near a plug point I would have really loved to work in the lawn area. I docked atmosphere because the service did impact...
Read moreWe chose to have my moms 80th Birthday at Mike's Kitchen Parktown . We left the place with mixed feelings. I first want to mention the positives about the place. The location is great with lush green well maintained gardens and well maintained interior and regularly cleaned rest rooms. The waitress who served us did an excellent job taking into consideration she was only there 3 months. The food was excellent and the chef's deserve a standing ovation.
On a rather sad note all this fell flat due to the unfriendly impersonal manager who treated us as though he was doing us a major favour by having us there after this embarrassing incident. The privaye place set aside for is to have the party was right next to the Male and female toilets used by the rest of the massive restaurant. During the personal family time of searches we has a great deal of the restaurant passing through the private party to the toilet. We did not appreciate the invasion. Secondly, my sons ordered craft beer and was served beer that was old and spoiled. One of my sons got physically sick in the bathroom of the restaurant. When we pointed it out to the manager he shouted at the poor waitress that was serving us. Later the evening when my wife tried to make a joke with this same unfriendly manager he rudely brushed her aside. Thank you to the waitress and the rest of the staff for the evening that turned out well despite the manager . A thumb up to the staff and a thumb down to...
