DC Landmark: The National Cathedral ⛪️ Gothic Architecture

The spiritual DCer finally visited the National Cathedral ⛪️ 🌟 The cathedral is not open for tours every day, so be sure to check the official website for dates. If you just want to walk around outside, no ticket is required 🎫 🌟 There are three levels to explore! The first floor is the main church, and I was amazed by the intricate stained glass and elaborate carvings inside. 🌟 Each stained glass window has a story behind it; one even features a “Space Window” with a lunar rock brought back by the Apollo 11 astronauts. 🌟 The basement has many prayer rooms and small chapels, as well as a puppet show, which is why there were many children around. 🌟 The 7th floor is a gallery and an observation deck overlooking DC, but it seemed to be closed when I went yesterday. 🌟 This weekend is the floral festival and DC Embassy Open House, so there are floral exhibitions from various countries’ embassies/missions on both sides of the main church 🤣 🌟 The gift shop even has a large section with a Lego replica of the National Cathedral! The staff explained that this was part of a fundraising project to restore the cathedral after an earthquake 👉 built with Lego bricks donated by visitors. They periodically open it to the public to build with the help of architects and volunteers, and the final product will be made of over 500,000 Lego bricks 😍😍 🌟 The Bishop’s Garden is located at the back right of the cathedral and is a medieval-style walled garden. It’s quite pleasant even though there aren’t many flowers. 🌟 Nearby, there’s a German restaurant called Old Europe. Apart from the slightly overcooked pork chop and slow service, the food is pretty good! Especially recommended are the sausage platter and Reuben’s sandwich. #WashingtonDC #DMVArea #DCSurroundings #WashingtonTravel #WashingtonNationalCathedral
