Detroit Japanese Restaurant | Shoyu

As the Title Says – No Need to Go to Fumi for Yakitori in Detroit Anymore! 🍣 I’ve had this spot recommended by friends for ages, and it totally gives off that cozy Torrance izakaya vibe—turns out I really do want both good looks and quality… sorry, but that’s just my standard when it comes to eating out! Omakase has Mister Hara (his food writing is getting more and more interesting, by the way), and I always love listening to the conversations at the next table when I’m at an izakaya. 🎬 This time, the person sitting next to us was 98% definitely Peter Dinklage—you know, the actor who played Tyrion in Game of Thrones! It’s rare to find someone with the exact same build and facial features, right? I was too shy to say anything, so I just quietly watched him at the adjacent table. Such a fun little surprise! 📍 Address: 1265 Washington Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226 No street parking? There’s a public lot next door for $10—super convenient. 5-Star Picks ✨✨✨✨✨ Scallop Skewer: Fresh and tender—melts in your mouth, no chewy texture at all. Total standout! Negima (Chicken Thigh & Leek Skewer): Order multiple sticks of this! The chicken thigh is juicy, and the leek adds a nice subtle sweetness. So addictive, I lost count of how many I ate. Gyutan (Beef Tongue): Surprisingly tender! I even mistook it for pork at first 😂—the texture is so soft, and it’s seasoned just right, no gamey aftertaste. 4-Star Picks ✨✨✨✨ Curry Katsu: It’s solid, nothing fancy—just a classic curry cutlet. The portion is big, though, so it’s great for filling up. Chicken Meatball: Moist and flavorful, but not as memorable as the skewers. Still a safe, tasty choice if you want something heartier. Skip This! ❗️ Do NOT order the Nikujaga (the dish in Photo 2). It’s tiny—just a few pieces of wagyu beef with some glass noodles. Like, are you kidding me? 🤣 Total waste of money. The restaurant’s vibe is chef’s kiss—the bar area feels even cozier, and there’s a dedicated whisky room in the back, perfect for a post-work drink 🍷🥃. Yet another day of envying Detroit office workers! Downtown Detroit is such an underrated city—so many new, delicious spots popping up lately 🥹. #IzakayaFood #Michigan #MichiganEats #Detroit #DetroitFood #MichiganLife #MichiganRestaurants #UniversityOfMichigan #AnnArborMichigan
