Drumheller (Dinosaur Valley) near Calgary

What an amazing surprise! So impressive and totally worth the trip! 🦖 I really envy Calgarians—it only takes them an hour and a half to drive here and experience this unique landscape and real dinosaur footprints. We set off from Winnipeg on a road trip, and before entering Calgary after leaving Saskatchewan, we first stopped at Drumheller, also known as the Dinosaur Valley. This area was once a dinosaur habitat where a large number of fossils were left behind. The landscape is incredibly unique, shaped by melting glacial waters from the Ice Age and centuries of wind and sun erosion. I’ve heard the weather here can be harsh—hot and dry in summer—but it had just rained on the day we visited, so it was relatively cool. 👇 Here are some recommended attractions: 🦕 Royal Tyrrell Museum One of the world’s largest dinosaur fossil museums, featuring complete dinosaur skeletons and ancient biological fossils. It’s very kid-friendly with interactive exhibits and educational activities. Allow at least two hours—you might even need three if you want to see everything in detail. Admission: Adult $21, Youth (7-17) $10, Children under 6 free. It’s best to book tickets online in advance to avoid long queues. Lots of people were waiting in line when we left—go early if you can! 🏞️ Hoodoos These unique rock pillars formed over millions of years of erosion look like giant mushrooms and create an almost alien landscape—perfect for photos! It reminded me of the Danxia landforms in Zhangye—abs breathtaking. I tried climbing up but my hat flew off and got stuck between rocks 😂. Be careful going downhill—it can be tricky. Wear comfortable shoes and sun protection! No entry fee, but parking costs apply. Poor signal made it hard to pay via QR code, but no one was checking. Very dry and sunny in the afternoon. 🌄 Horseshoe Canyon A deep multi-layered canyon with strikingly colored rock layers—a holy grail for photographers and hikers. We stopped by on our way out the next afternoon. Sadly, we missed the golden hour, but I heard the sunset views are incredible. Free entry, parking fee required. 🦖 World’s Largest Dinosaur A 26-meter-tall dinosaur statue visible from the road. For $5, you can climb up into its mouth and enjoy a view of the whole town. 👉 Accommodation: There are many hotels in town, but we chose to camp at The Hoodoo RV Resort & Campground. The site is huge, with toilets and showers available. They also have ready-to-stay trailers. PS: The drive into Drumheller alone is breathtaking. The town is cozy too—I definitely want to come back! #Canada #NorthAmericanLife #NaturesWonder #Calgary #Edmonton #Dinosaur #Fossils #RoadTrip 🌍🚗✨
