Dunedin: The Underrated Gem of New Zealand's South Island 🌟
I don’t understand how anyone could "dodge" this flawless city—after living in New Zealand for over a month, Dunedin easily tops my list of favorites! Nestled on the South Island’s east coast, this city is often overlooked by road-trippers. What a shame! 🚗💨 Known as the "Edinburgh of the Southern Hemisphere," Dunedin instantly charms visitors with its rich history and stunning natural landscapes—unlike anywhere else in New Zealand. Leaving here, I was genuinely heartbroken I didn’t stay longer! 💔 📍 Port Chalmers A hidden gem just 20 minutes by Bus #14 from downtown! The coastal ride alone is breathtaking. Perched on a hillside, this port town is framed by mountains and sea, with crazy-steep streets adding to its quirky charm. Don’t miss: 1️⃣ Lady Thorn Dell Lookout 2️⃣ Flagstaff Lookout 🏙️ Downtown Dunedin = CityWalk Paradise 📍 Tūhura Otago Museum Possibly the best museum in the South Island (Christchurch’s is still under repair). Free entry, world-class exhibits—I went twice and still couldn’t get enough! The oceanic civilization section is mind-blowing. 📍 Toitū Otago Settlers Museum Packed with artifacts, including vintage cars, and leads straight to the Shanghai-inspired Lan Yuan (Dunedin Chinese Garden)—a sister garden to the famous Yuyuan Garden! 📍 First Church of Otago A gorgeous Gothic masterpiece—its towering spire pierces the sky. Stunning from every angle! 📍 Dunedin Railway Station A photographer’s dream 📸! You can even book scenic train rides straight from here. 🌊 Missed Spots = Excuses to Return! Tunnel Beach (closed when I visited 😭) Larnach Castle Sandfly Bay Next time, Dunedin—I’m coming for you! #NewYearsFirstTrip #OffTheBeatenPath #ExploreNewZealand #SouthIslandMagic 🇳🇿💙
