Exceptional staff and great rolls! 🍣 We have been lucky enough to go to Maui for many years. One of our regular dinner spots is Japengo—and it’s never let us down, not even once! The Chef's daily special roll is always a revelation of flavours: fresh fish that melts in your mouth, crisp micro greens that add a nice crunch, and creative aiolis that tie everything together. Every bite is a happy surprise—we never know what the chef will come up with, but it’s always exceptional. The outside views are pure magic, too! We always book an outdoor table so we can watch the ocean while we eat. As the sun sets, the sky turns pink and orange, and the waves gently hit the shore—it makes every meal feel like a little vacation within a vacation 🌅. 👩🍳The daily fresh fish special is another go-to. It’s always super fresh (straight from the local fish market that morning!) and simply prepared—no fancy sauces to hide the natural flavour. Last time we had pan-seared mahi-mahi, and this year we tried grilled wahoo—both were so tender and tasty, we cleaned our plates in minutes.😂 But what truly makes Japengo stand out is the staff—they’re like family, not just servers. Jimmy at the front of house is the kindest person; he always remembers us, greets us with a warm smile, and even saves our favourite table year after year.😂 We’ve been served by Misty, Kato, Michael, and most recently Cat—all of them are amazing! They’re engaged (they actually listen when you talk!), knowledgable about the menu (they’ll help you pick the perfect roll or wine), and always cordial. This time, Cat even remembered I mentioned loving uni last year—she talked to the chef, and we got a free uni hand roll as a little treat! It’s those small, thoughtful touches that make us look forward to coming back every year.😂 📌All the staff we mentioned are true ambassadors for the restaurant.
