Exploring Newfoundland Without a Car: St. John’s Adventure Guide 🚶♀️✨
Let’s dive into some highlights! This is mostly our personal experience, so feel free to explore in your own way—everyone’s travel vibes are unique, and that’s what makes it fun! 😊 Northeast Direction 🌬️ The attractions here are about a 40-minute walk from downtown, with a gentle uphill stretch—so we recommend taking a ride up to the top of Signal Hill first, then strolling down via the trails. It’s way more enjoyable that way! 🚗➡️👟 Signal Hill 🏔️ Perched high at the bay’s entrance, Signal Hill is steeped in history—it was once a vital spot for communicating with ships and defending the harbor! From up here, you get stunning panoramic views of the entire city and harbor 🌉. Fun fact: In 1901, Marconi completed the first transatlantic wireless signal transmission right here—how cool is that? 📡 Don’t miss the historic cannons and Cabot Tower, and catch the daily noon cannon firing ceremony for a little dose of nostalgia! 🎉 Pro Route Tip: Ride up to the visitor center, then hike the Centre to Summit Trail to explore the cannons. After checking out Cabot Tower, head down via The North Head Trail, passing through The Battery on your way back to downtown 🗺️. On the way up, you’ll pass the Johnson Geo Centre—a fascinating geology museum—pop in if rocks and earth science spark your curiosity! 🌍 If you’re feeling energetic and love nature, reverse it: Hike up The North Head Trail, then continue on the Ladies' Lookout Trail straight to Quidi Vidi. The trails aren’t too tough, and trust us—the views (even with a breezy wind!) are 100% worth it! 💨❤️ Quidi Vidi Village 🐟 This charming little fishing village is so picturesque! You can still hop on a fishing boat to catch cod—though regulations mean it’s only from Saturday to Monday. When they haul in the catch, the shores erupt in cheers, and you can watch the fish being prepared fresh on board—it’s such a lively, authentic scene! 🎣 Quidi Vidi Brewery is a must-visit too—they use glacial meltwater to brew their beer! 🧊 Tour the facilities and sip on fresh tap versions (way more flavorful than bottled!), while their cans and bottles are available at restaurants all over Newfoundland 🍻. Wander the Artisan Studios to check out local artists’ work—there are adorable handcrafted goodies like fuzzy felt puffin art. So cute! 🧶🐦 Terry Fox Memorial 🙏 A heartfelt stop: The Terry Fox Memorial honors an incredible story. In 1977, after losing his right leg to cancer, athlete Terry Fox launched a cross-country run to raise funds for cancer research. Starting from St. John’s, he ran a marathon every day westward, covering over 5,000 km in 143 days before his illness forced him to stop in Ontario. 🦾💛 His starting point now has a memorial—keep an eye out for it on your way back to downtown from Signal Hill; it’s a moving tribute to his courage. That’s a wrap for now—we’re keeping it concise! Next up, we’ll dive into southern attractions, plus where to stay and delicious eats.
