First Impressions of South Africa's Garden Route
Yesterday, after going through countless travel guides, I carefully selected some attractions along the way for a review today. Here are the results. Please like and save this for future reference. Today's Route: Hermanus —— Abagold Abalone Farm —— Klipgat Caves —— Cape Agulhas —— Mossel Bay I. Hermanus City Center: Abalone Farm Review and Seafood Guide 🚫Abagold Abalone Farm Avoid This Tourist Trap: Visiting the Abagold abalone farm, which is supposed to be a place where abalone is farmed, turned out to be a "tourist-only shopping spot." The entire tour lasts only 20 minutes and is more like a production line visit. Afterward, you are pushed to buy expensive abalone canned goods (650-950 ZAR per can), which is not cost-effective at all. ❌ Seafood Recommendation: If you want to try fresh abalone, it's better to go to a seafood restaurant in the city center. You can enjoy a delicious meal for around 200 ZAR per person. II. Klipgat Caves: 3000-Year-Old Primitive Cave Exploration 🌿Highlights of This Hidden Gem San Rock Art: This cave features 3000-year-old San rock paintings. The cave entrance faces the Atlantic Ocean directly. If you use a drone for aerial photography, you can capture the stunning view of the cave and the coastline. However, be aware that it takes a 15-minute walk from the parking lot to the cave. The first half of the path has steep stone steps (some of which are loose), and the second half consists of mossy rocks. You must wear non-slip shoes (I tried sports shoes and slipped easily). There are no railings, and the cave is closed on rainy days. It's recommended to go with a companion. 📍Practical Information Navigation: Klipgat Caves Nature Reserve (45 minutes' drive from the city center) Admission Fee: 60 ZAR per person (cash only, purchased at the small wooden hut at the entrance) Opening Hours: 8:00-17:00 (last entry at 16:30) III. Cape Agulhas: The Ultimate Guide to the Southernmost Point of Africa 🗺️Three Must-Visit Spots Japanese Shipwreck Meisho Maru Navigation: Directly search for "Meisho Maru Shipwreck" on Google Maps. It's a 5-minute walk from the parking lot to the beach. You can only get close to the wreck during low tide. The rust-red shipwreck contrasts beautifully with the waves, making for some amazing photos. Southern Tip of Africa Monument Navigation: Search for "Southern Tip of Africa Monument" on Google Maps. The parking lot is free, and it's an 8-minute walk to the landmark. The ground features a copper outline of the African continent. Standing on the "southernmost point of Africa" for a photo gives you a great sense of ceremony! Cape Agulhas Lighthouse Drone Photography Tip: If you have a drone, there's no need to climb the lighthouse. The aerial view is even better. The lighthouse charges 30 ZAR per person and requires climbing 89 spiral stairs (not recommended for those with acrophobia). It's open from 9:00-16:30 (closed on Mondays). From the top, you can see the unique sight of the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean waves colliding. The wind is very strong, so be sure to hold on tight to your phone! IV. Hermanus to Mossel Bay: 3-Hour Drive Tips 🚗Road Conditions N2 National Highway: The first hour of the drive has many mountainous bends (speed limit 80 km/h), while the last two hours are through flat farmland. After 4:00 PM, the light becomes softer, and opening the sunroof to take photos of the wheat fields along the road can be very picturesque. #SouthAfricaTravel #HermanusTravelTips #CapeAgulhas #HiddenGems #RoadTrip
