Firstborn | LA Chinatown 🥢✨
The beef tartare was described as “mapo tofu” flavored, but I tasted unexpected sweet and sour notes—not what I associate with mapo at all. Personally, I felt the seasoning was too heavy and didn’t harmonize well with the raw beef and soft tofu. The sugar pea and radish appetizer came with a mustard-based dip. Not my thing since I’m not a big mustard fan. 🥬😅 The BBQ cabbage was delicious though—sweet, tangy, and generously oiled. Honestly, heavily grilled veggies are my favorite way to eat vegetables lol. 🔥 The braised ox tail in fried sauce was tasty and tender, with soft little squid pieces mixed in. Pretty small portion though. 🐙🍲 The short rib was classic American BBQ—rich and flavorful, but didn’t really connect to Chinese cuisine for me. Dessert was a highlight! The cucumber apple shaved ice (on the right) had a really unique and refreshing taste. 🍧❄️ Cocktails were decent, nothing extraordinary. Funny enough, during our meal, every older gentleman at nearby tables asked to meet the chef—not sure why! 👨🍳🤔 Overall, if you love trying new spots, you might enjoy the experience. But if you’re looking for great value or authentic flavors, maybe skip this one. Didn’t leave feeling like the money was well spent. 💸🙈 Have you been to Firstborn?
