Free Hiking Trail in Kotor? Breathtaking Views But Don’t Risk
"Almost everyone visiting Kotor climbs to San Giovanni Fortress, but there’s a ‘hidden trail’ with even more natural scenery—and no ticket required!" 📍 Trail Name: Alternative Way to the Fortress (search on Google Maps) Starting Point: From the Old Town’s North Gate (walk straight to P3, see the iron gate in P4, and follow the small path alongside it). Route Length: ~3 km round trip, 300m elevation gain. Time: ~40 mins uphill, 30 mins downhill. Perfect for a morning hike! 🌿 What Makes This Trail Special? Unlike the main paid entrance, this path winds around the back mountain, offering wildflowers, stone walls, grazing goats, and ancient steps. Ideal for quiet nature lovers! We (a group of girls) started at 6 AM—sunlight glowing over the valley and Bay of Kotor was utterly healing. Halfway up, a platform overlooks the entire Old Town and bay—absolutely majestic! 🚧 Safety Warning at the "Cave Entrance"! The free trail ends at a cave opening leading to the official fortress area (which requires a ticket). Some tourists try to "sneak in" here, but we found: The cave opening is high, with unstable rocks below—zero safety measures. For us (around 160cm tall), it was impossible to climb without slipping or injuring ourselves. This cave isn’t designed for tourists—high risk! We turned back and do NOT recommend using this to evade tickets. It’s dangerous and unethical. 🌄 Who Is This Trail For? Morning hikers who love nature and quiet views. Travelers seeking panoramic Bay of Kotor vistas without "checklist tourism." Avoid sandals or skirts—wear hiking shoes or sneakers! #KotorHiking #MontenegroTravel #OffbeatHikes #BayOfKotor #Kotor
