Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is not only the largest state park in California and the third largest in the U.S., but also one of the few places in Southern California where you can witness the full glory of the Milky Way! 🌠 The most accessible gateway is the town of Borrego Springs, about a 2-hour drive from San Diego 🚗💨. Notably, it’s certified as an International Dark Sky Community 🌙, with local regulations limiting streetlight brightness to minimize light pollution – making it an ideal stargazing destination! For the best galaxy views, plan your trip around the new moon or wait until after moonset 🌑. While the naked eye can clearly make out the outline and colors of the Milky Way’s core, it obviously won’t be as vivid as in long-exposure photos 📸. I went in late August – the desert was scorching hot during the day (up to 40°C/104°F) but still around 28°C/82°F at night.
