Galle| Sri Lanka

๐Ÿฎ This city, which retains a rich modern style, is located at the southwesternmost tip of Sri Lanka, 100 kilometers north of Colombo. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€ ๐Ÿ’žAt the natural harbor formed by a rocky peninsula, there is an old town surrounded by city walls and castles, with hundreds of various modern buildings scattered within. ๐Ÿ˜Š With the sea breeze blowing and the beach in the background, it can be described as full of charm.๐ŸŠ ๐Ÿฎ As early as the beginning of the 16th century, the Portuguese fleet arrived here and gradually built defensive fortifications. In 1640, the Dutch occupied Galle, destroying most of the traces of the Portuguese, but also built a more complete defense system with the help of the original city walls and fortresses. Thus, Galle became the main port of Sri Lanka and an important stop for European ships.๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒˆ ๐Ÿฎ At the beginning of the 19th century, the British took control of Sri Lanka, and the commercial center gradually moved north to Colombo. ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ’žGalle's status became secondary, but it still left facilities such as the main city gate and the clock tower. Perhaps because it no longer served as the "primary port", it has better preserved the colonial-era style and become one of Sri Lanka's six world heritage sites, the latest in age but also uniquely charming.๐ŸŽ ๐Ÿฎ Today, in addition to the most historic city walls, the city still retains modern buildings such as official residences, office buildings, churches, mosques, warehouses, armories, workshops, markets, and hospitals.๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅ Some of them have been repurposed as museums, restaurants๐Ÿš๏ธ, bookstores, galleries, etc., and their cultural style remains distinct. The streets of the old town are also clearly divided into primary and secondary ones, with a large number of verandas and small shops along the streets.๐Ÿ•‹ A half-day city walk, casually strolling and eating, is extremely comfortable.๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘ˆ So far, I have visited all 6 World Cultural Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka, which are: Anuradhapura, the earliest and longest-serving capital๐Ÿ๐ŸŽผ Polonnaruwa, the capital during the period ๐Ÿ˜˜Kandy, the last ancient capital of traditional Sri Lanka Sigiriya, a masterpiece of ancient palaces with beautiful mountains and rivers๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿ–๏ธ ๐ŸŒŸDambulla Cave Temple, a royal cave temple with a history of over a thousand years Galle, a living fossil of the colonial era Next, I can wander along the coast and enjoy the scenery.๐Ÿ’˜๐Ÿ’˜ #SriLanka#GalleFort
