Germany · Autumn Hiking at Jenner Mountain
On an early November morning, just past 9 a.m., the Jennerbahn cable car station was still shrouded in a damp, misty haze. Hikers quickly scattered along the winding trails, disappearing into the fog like scenes from Silent Hill. 🌫️ Recently, I’ve been reading Li Juan’s books, and one line felt particularly fitting: "The forest was so quiet it was as if the air was full of ears, full of listening." That deep silence—where no humans are around, yet the subtle rustles of wildlife create a rich, alive stillness—was exactly what surrounded me. About Jenner Mountain 🗺️ Elevation: 1,874m Location: Part of Berchtesgaden National Park, the German Alps Nearby Highlights: Königssee (King’s Lake) and the enchanting Zauberwald (Magic Forest) After about an hour of hiking, I emerged above the fog into crisp autumn air. Summer had passed, leaving only a dusting of snow on the distant peaks, while thick mist clung to the lower slopes. Suddenly, it hit me—I’d just walked through that very fog! The trails were well-marked with blue (easy) and red (moderate) signs, but honestly, everything felt pleasantly manageable. As the sun rose, the temperature warmed noticeably, and the clouds around the mid-mountain began to dissolve. Along the way, I passed a small alpine lake—nothing spectacular, but peaceful. After roughly two hours, I reached Mittelstation, a mid-mountain cable car stop with a cozy café—perfect for a snack break. ☕🥪 From here, you can either take the cable car down or continue upward. In good weather, the summit is only about an hour’s hike away. The Summit Experience ⛰️ The top cable station isn’t the true peak—a final 10-minute steep climb leads to a cross-marked summit, the highest point of Jenner. The contrast was striking: summer-like meadows below, but full autumn colors at the top. On clear days, you can see Königsee glittering in the distance, and paragliders often dot the sky. 🪂 Overall, it’s a relaxed, well-maintained hike with restaurants at both mid-station and summit—so you can travel light.
