Good food in the army pot

📍 650 Yates St, Victoria, BC V8W 1L3 This Korean restaurant in Victoria Downtown is pretty spacious, with roomy seats—and they’ve finally started turning on more lights lately! No more dining in the dark, thank goodness. They seem to be trying to go the "high-tech" route like Yua, but it’s still in the trial stage—only four tables have tablets for self-ordering. Sadly, we didn’t get seated at one of those, so no chance to try it out. The servers are all nice, and they’re open late till 12 AM, which is handy. We noticed they’ve quietly raised prices a bit when paying, but the food’s still tasty—definitely one of my faves. ✅ Corn Cheese 💰13.5 My must-order every time! It’s a hot plate of creamy cheese corn, with simple ingredients: just corn, cheese, and a sprinkle of green onion on top. The portion isn’t huge—just a thin layer of cheesy corn—but it’s so good. They use sweet, crisp fruit corn, and the cheese has mayo mixed in, making it extra sweet and creamy. You gotta stir it up right when it arrives, though—otherwise the super hot plate might burn the bottom. 🧀🌽 ✅ Donkatsu (Pork Katsu) 💰18.5 Huge piece of fried pork cutlet! They use lean pork, no fatty bits, and it’s pressed thin before frying—crunchy, and it feels like they blotted the oil, so no greasiness at all. It’s sliced into thin strips, which makes it easy to eat. The sauce looks like curry but isn’t—probably their own blend. It’s tangy, salty, and a little sweet, with such a nice layered flavor—totally cuts through any leftover oil from frying. It comes with rice and shredded cabbage salad, but the salad uses a mix of ketchup and dressing—weirdly heavy, so I mostly skipped that. The katsu itself? Chef’s kiss. 🍖 ✅ Army Soup 💰36 Delicious budae jjigae! They’ve switched to a bigger, deeper pot lately—more stuff fits, though the price went up a bit too. The seasoning isn’t overly salty, which is nice, and it’s packed with all the classic army soup bits: cabbage, tofu, hot dogs, spam, instant noodles, rice cakes… you name it. They don’t include fish cakes by default, though—you gotta pay $3 extra for those (worth it, in my book). Let it simmer on the small stove for a while after it’s served, and everything soaks up the flavor. Plus, even if you cook it a bit longer, it doesn’t get messy or burn—love that. 🥘 #Canada #CanadaFood #VancouverIsland #Victoria #Foodie #LifeSnippets #FoodTour #MyDailyLife
