Halifax Food Adventure #15 (Japanese Izakaya Edition 🏮)

Kanpai Izakaya 📍 1535 Dresden Row, Halifax, NS Parking: After 5 PM on weekdays or all day on weekends, the nearby indoor parking lot is safe and only $2/hour! 🚗💨 Street parking is even better if you can find a spot. 🌹 Why This Place Stands Out This is one of those rare Halifax spots worth revisiting again and again! 💖 The prices are reasonable, and the menu is packed with options. We skipped rice bowls (don) and focused on bar snacks and small plates, so our bill averaged ~$60/person. For a lighter meal (with rice/noodle dishes), $40/person is plenty! 🍢 What We Ordered ⭐ Wagyu Skewers (Sold Out 😭) We missed the Wagyu beef skewers (weekend rush!), but tried the beef tongue—a bit overcooked for our taste (we prefer KORBQ’s pre-marinated version). Still, it was authentic and unprocessed. ⭐ Grilled Squid ($15) – BEST VALUE! A whole fresh squid, butter-grilled to perfection! 🦑 The texture was chewy but tender, and the sauce? Divine. 👌 ⭐ Takoyaki (Finally, REAL Ones!) After terrible frozen takoyaki experiences elsewhere in Halifax, these freshly made octopus balls were a revelation! 🐙💥 Crispy outside, fluffy inside—just like Japan! ⭐ Chicken Liver (Unexpected Hit!) Not every izakaya has this! We took a chance and loved it—rich, creamy, and zero weird aftertaste. ⭐ Salmon Head (Limited Availability, $7) Since most Westerners avoid it, we snagged the last one! 🐟 Simply seasoned with salt & pepper, then charcoal-grilled. Fresh but basic—next time, we’ll try the smelt or mackerel instead. ⭐ Assorted Yakitori Skewers All charcoal-grilled with minimal marinade—bold, natural flavors. The eel (unagi) skewers used fresh (not frozen) eel glazed with their signature sauce. ⭐ Sushi Platter (A Bit Pricey) For me, sushi is sushi if it’s fresh—but their omurice (Japanese omelet rice) was a standout! 🍳 Rice bowls (don) are a steal at ~$10+ each. 🍶 Drinks Go for sake or shochu (well-priced!), or try their sake-based cocktails for a modern twist on tradition. 🍸 Final Verdict: ✅ Authentic izakaya vibes ✅ Fresh, high-quality ingredients ✅ Great for groups or dates ✅ Reasonable prices (for Halifax!) Will I return? Absolutely—next time for that Wagyu! 🤤 #HalifaxEats #JapaneseIzakaya #WeekendFoodie #CanadianFood #HiddenGems #SquidLover #YakitoriTime #NoMoreFrozenTakoyaki #SakeNight #ExploreHalifax 🎌🍢✨
