Kanpai Izakaya — Restaurant in Halifax

So disappointed! The food was great as usual（that's why I gave 2 stars), but the service were definitely not good!! It was my birthday yesterday and I brought my boyfriend and my best friend with me, they've never tried it before. Waiting for 45 minutes for the "Yuke". After we almost finished all other appetizers and main course, we realized that may be they forgot to put in the order. But we just asked them to make it fast and we didn't blame them. They said it's already made. Our server did ask "how you doing so far" two times, She also took the empty plates but my friend asked for water refills and the server said yes and never showed up. Then another friend came in join us after work, "Yuke" still not ready(20 minutes later). I asked them to cancel it but it was served at that moment. My friend added "Unagi Don“, and after 25 minutes we asked them why the food still not here. The other server standing at counter told us nothing added in our order!!?! And then we decided to leave. Very rarely do you experience something so incredible that you regret not experiencing it sooner.

That was my dining experience at Kanpai Izakaya.

If ever there was a place I could put at the top of a hidden gems list for Halifax, this would be it, by an absolute landslide.

Food is top notch, authentic Japanese comfort food - It will never disappoint, it is simply perfect. The service is attentive, friendly, and spot on, always there right when you think you might need them. But what takes Kanpai Izakaya to a tier of its own is the atmosphere this restaurant is able to curate. You enter and feel like you've walked into a small family run restaurant/bar off a quiet side street in Kyoto. It's warm, interesting, comfortable, and somewhere you will want to spend hours (there's lots of Sapporo to keep you company too).

It also feels as though the restaurant has not been fully discovered. And as much as I would hate to have trouble getting a table, it would be a shame if people didn't experience Kanpai Izakaya.

Absolutely blown away by this place, there's no excuse not to try it.

Disappointed with the service, but food was pretty good. We made a reservation prior to our arrival. We arrived at 7:2 and we started eating food about 8:40 PM... There were two waitresses working and the place wasn't busy. After 10 minutes of waiting by the door and being greeted by the chef, a waitress finally came to greet us and seat us. Pretty sure they forgot we even came in. We waited 40 minutes patiently for a waitress to come take our order and bring something to drink. They never made any eye contact, and never checked in with us. We had to get up and go to the kitchen and ask for our order. My wife and I were expecting really good service and food, but were really disappointed and felt not welcomed at the restaurant.

The food 4/5 for us: Chicken karaage tasted good, but wasn't crispy. The fish tasted good and seemed fresh. The rice was good. A bit pricy compared to other sushi places nearby.
