Hidden Gem in the Heart of London’s Financial District

📍 Guildhall Art Gallery This city hall art gallery, nestled in London’s financial district, is truly an under-the-radar treasure. 🏛️ Built in 1885, it was originally meant to showcase the growing art collection of the City of London Corporation, but it was almost completely destroyed during a severe air raid in World War II. After years of planning and restoration, the new building opened to the public in 1999, and it was during this reconstruction that archaeologists unearthed the remains of a Roman amphitheater beneath it. 🎭 Constructed in the 1st century, this amphitheater was an entertainment venue for Romans in London. It could accommodate 7,000 spectators for gladiator shows. Today, you can still experience the grandeur of the Roman arena through lighting and projections. 🖼️ The gallery is comprised of three sections: Victorian Paintings, The London Collection, and Roman Amphitheatre, all revolving around artworks related to London’s history and culture. The main collections include Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite works, as well as modern collections. 📣 There are two free guided tours daily at 12:15 and 13:15 from Tuesday to Sunday, lasting about 30 to 45 minutes, no need to book! ⌛️ Open from Monday to Sunday, 10 am - 5 pm 🎫 Admission is free. #WhereToGoInLondonOnTheWeekend #LondonHiddenGems #LondonLife #VirtualGalleryTour #MustVisitMuseums #LondonExhibitions #FreeLondonAttractions #ExploreTheCitysSecretCorners #LondonFinancialDistrict #RomanRuins
