Hiking the Red Rock Trail from Lake Forest šļøāØ
Wanted to see those big, fascinating rocks up close! Starting from Irvine, you usually need to book through OCās letsgooutside.org, but I only found organized group hikes thereāwhich are actually pretty cool! š¦šæ There are bird-watching tours, plant identification walks, fat-burning cardio hikes, horseback riding trails, and more. Each activity lists its difficulty level, and interested folks can sign up for free on the website. BUTāwe just wanted a relaxed 2-hour hike on our own. After some research, we found that starting from the Red Rock Trail in Lake Forest also leads to the big red rocks, and no reservation is needed! We headed out early todayājust a 20-minute drive from Irvine to the Whiting Ranch lower parking lot. Parking was $3 for the day, and we walked straight into the trails. Since itās a valley path, most of the route is shaded š³. It felt pretty chilly around 9 AM! The trail seemed to follow a dry creek bedāscattered with pebbles and rocky surfacesāmaking it a unique and refreshing hiking experience. There were signs at the entrance warning about mountain lions š¾, but we didnāt spot any. Instead, we saw tons of wildlife! Ground squirrels (maybe 50+!), wild rabbits, and various birds dining and flirting right near our feet and overhead. If you love little creatures, you might find yourself stopping constantly! ā¼ļø Remember: as much as you might want to interact, donāt touch the plants or animals. Some, like Poison Oak, are highly allergenic and can be dangerous. So enjoy gently and leave no trace~ After about 50 minutes of flat walking, the landscape completely changes: you reach the big red rocks! šŖØā¤ļø Although the view isnāt vast, itās still impressive. Holidays can get crowded, making it hard to take good photos, so try to visit on weekdays if you can! The only downside was the lack of elevationāthe 4-mile round trip felt almost too easy. Itās basically like sipping coffee ā and chatting with friends while walking š . Maybe next time Iāll join one of Irvineās āRed Rock Wildernessā fat-burning hikes to see what a real challenge feels like! #IrvineHiking #LakeForestHikes #CaliforniaHiking #NatureWalk #OutdoorAdventure #RedRocks #WildlifeWatching #SoCalTrails #HikeLocal #ExploreOC
