Indonesian Food in LA | Medan Kitchen
This is my fourth time visiting—there aren’t many restaurants in LA I’ve been to more than four times, and each visit brings something new to discover! 😊 🍰 Lapis Surabaya - Surabaya Layer Cake Chocolate, pandan, and vanilla flavors—the texture is denser and richer than sponge cake, probably because of the extra butter. Each layer is spread with sweet jam for extra flavor. So delicious! 🍫🌿 🌯 Lemper Ayam - Chicken Sticky Rice Roll Tastes totally different from Chinese zongzi! The outer layer is sticky rice, likely cooked with coconut milk and a bit of sugar, filled with savory-sweet shredded chicken. Since there’s no fatty meat, it’s much less greasy—feels a bit lighter to eat, haha! 😄 🥓 Sate Ayam - Indonesian Chicken Satay I’ve ordered this twice before—the sauce is absolutely amazing! It’s a rich, slightly sweet and savory peanut sauce mixed with coconut milk, sweet soy sauce, garlic, chili, and lemongrass. So good with everything! Though before, it came with rice cakes—this time, it didn’t. Still yummy! 🥜🍢 🍢 Pempek - Indonesian Fried Fish Cake You can tell from the first bite that it’s made with tapioca starch—chewy and bouncy! The sauce is very sweet, made with palm sugar, vinegar, garlic, and dried shrimp, but the sweetness stands out. The chili is tasty though—spicy right on the tip of your tongue. The powder sprinkled on top is finely ground dried shrimp—I just sprinkled it all over, not sure if that’s the right way, but it worked! 😆 I feel like I’ve tried almost all of Indonesian cuisine at this place. Maybe one more visit for some fried noodles and a few desserts, and I’ll have completed the tour! Total: $50 💵 After eating, we went to Trader Joe’s. The new “cheong fun” rice rolls are pretty good—as long as you don’t think of them as real cheong fun! Steaming or microwaving works well; frying or baking, not so much. Also, the white strawberries? Not great—better to skip! 🍓❌ And surprisingly, I found eggs there at around 4 PM! Looks like supplies are slowly returning. 🥚🛒 Have you tried Indonesian food before? What’s your favorite dish?
