Israel - Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Burial Place of Jesus

🔅 Entering the Old City through Jaffa Gate, the first stop is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the endpoint of the Via Dolorosa and the site of Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified and resurrected. For tourists, all of this may seem like mere symbols and legends. 🔅Yet, the devout believers who flock here still seek to connect as closely as possible with this sacred site. The pious worshippers and the mottled church together form the scenery here. 🕌 In the 3rd century AD, under the persuasion of Emperor Constantine's mother, Helena, it was decided to demolish a temple of Venus built by Hadrian on the site (constructed in 135 AD) and to build a church on the site of Jesus' burial. 🕌 In the 6th century, when Muslims occupied Jerusalem, the church was destroyed by the then Caliph in 1009 AD. Due to a lack of funds, the restoration progressed slowly. It wasn't until the Byzantine Empire provided subsidies that the work was barely continued. ✅In the 12th century, with the arrival of the Crusaders, some modifications were made to the church. Most of what we see today is the work of the Byzantines and the Crusaders. 🕌 Over the centuries, the church has continued to suffer from natural disasters, fires, wars, and conflicts among various Christian denominations. Due to a lack of funds, the church has always been in a state of patchwork repairs. ✅ The interior of the church is actually composed of several small chapels. Upon entering, there is a stone for the anointing ritual, where the priest anointed Jesus' body with oil. The oil is poured onto the stone and then wiped off with a handkerchief, which becomes a "blessed" souvenir. ▶️The Holy Sepulchre is placed under a circular dome, surrounded by scaffolding. It is a very low cave, inside which lies the stone sarcophagus believed to have held Jesus' body, polished smooth by the touch of worshippers. ▶️With the final worship concluded, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre closes promptly at 9 PM. Due to the complex conflicts among Christian denominations, the keys to the church have been held by the Nusseibeh family, the oldest Muslim family in Jerusalem, since the time of Saladin.
