Kansas City BBQ Showdown: Joe’s KC vs. Q39 🍖🔥
On my first trip to Kansas City, I knew I had to dive into the city’s legendary BBQ scene. I tried two of the most highly rated spots — Joe’s KC Barbeque and Q39 — and here’s my honest take! 💵 Price Point: Similar! Each meal (shown in photos) came to around $75–80 including tax & tip. 🏆 Joe’s KC Barbeque ✅ Pros: Semi-self-service — order at the counter, grab your own drinks and utensils, and find a seat. Tip less if you prefer! Brisket — sliced thin, tender, not dry or overly fatty. Different from typical American BBQ, but I loved it! Burnt Ends — absolutely divine. Melts in your mouth with a crispy edge. Dirty Rice — a MUST! No beans here — just flavorful rice with jalapeños, onion, celery, and what tasted like chili, cumin, and beef broth. So tasty! ❌ Cons: Long lines — we waited over 30 minutes twice. The third time, we ordered online for pickup (genius!). Downsides? Online orders don’t include burnt ends or specialty drinks. Fries — too salty. Shake off those crystals! Mac & Cheese — just okay. Go for the small size. Small dining area — grab any seat you can find. Seasonal Vegetables — disappointing. Just corn with mayo 😒 💡 Tips: Order online to save time — their packaging is leak-proof! Try the kids’ meals for smaller portions and more variety. 🥊 Q39 ✅ Pros: Sausage — juicy, well-spiced, with a crispy snap. Seasonal Vegetables — finally, real veggies! Sautéed kale, bell peppers, onion, and broccoli in beef tallow. Pork Belly Tacos — tender, flavorful, topped with refreshing cabbage. Mac & Cheese — rich and delicious with five cheeses and breadcrumb topping. Spacious dining room — no wait, and friendly hostesses! ❌ Cons: Brisket — thick-cut, dry, and tough. Burnt Ends — overcooked and bitter, missing that tender goodness. Fries — also too salty. 🥡 Final Thoughts: BBQ is the heart of KC — and for me, Joe’s KC wins for meat quality. At both spots, go easy on the sauce — the flavor stands strong on its own (and your kidneys will thank you later 😅). Have you tried KC BBQ?
