Kyoto • Daikaku-ji Temple(1) 🌿

Daikaku-ji Temple in Arashiyama is the head temple of the Shingon Daikaku-ji School. 🌿 Historically, the position of head priest has been held by members of the imperial family. 🎢🌟 The official name is the Former Saga Imperial Villa Daikaku-ji Monzeki. 🌿 It is famous for the practice of writing the Heart Sutra. Saga-in, the former residence of Emperor Saga, was converted into a temple in the early Heian period, during the 18th year of the Jōgan era (876), by Princess Toshi, who became a nun. 🎢🌟 In the late Kamakura period, Emperor Saga and Emperor Go-Uda began their cloistered rule here, and it was also known as Saga-no-Miya. 🌇 🌿 Within Daikaku-ji Temple, there are buildings in the shinden-zukuri style, including the "Shinden" with peony and red-and-white plum paintings by Kano Sanraku, the "Shōshinden" with 12 rooms in the shoin-zukuri style, and the main hall "Godai-dō" housing the statues of the Five Great Wisdom Kings. 🌿 🌿 #Kyoto 🌿
