LA/OC Exhibition | California Biennial 2025 🎨

OCMA is currently hosting the California Biennial and Light Atlas—and I highly, highly recommend visiting! ✨ ✨ 2025 California Biennial: Desperate, Scared, But Social • This year’s California Biennial (held since 1984) focuses on youth and coming of age, exploring themes like adolescent/young adult anxiety, longing, and social relationships. It delves into the complex landscapes of growth, identity, community, and socialization. • Curated collaboratively by OCMA’s curatorial team and the Orange County Young Curators—marking the first time OCMA has invited teenagers to co-curate the exhibition. • The title is inspired by the 1990s OC underground girl band Emily’s Sassy Lime’s debut album. The exhibition brings together 12 artists/collectives, spanning painting, video, installation, performance, and archives (you can even listen to vinyl records on-site!). • One particularly fascinating section is a special "historical chapter" featuring early painting collections from Gardena High School—a public high school in suburban Los Angeles. Since 1919, each graduating class has fundraised to purchase a work by a California artist for the school. Over a century, this has created an accidental "student-era art museum" with hundreds of early 20th-century California Impressionist works. 💡 After viewing the entire exhibition, you can really feel OCMA’s evolution and elevation. I personally love how it connects/supports the community while fostering intergenerational collaboration. The works reflect California’s spirit across different eras, and the curation, perspective, and final presentation are all brilliantly executed. Have you visited yet?
