London's Oldest Church: A 900-Year Journey Through Time
In my last post, I shared the statue of Henry VIII on the gatehouse of St Bartholomew's Hospital. Right next to it stands St Bartholomew-the-Great, London's oldest surviving church! 🏰 A Glimpse into History: Founded in 1123 as a priory church, it survived Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries (1539), though its nave was demolished. The Tudor-era gatehouse (still recognizable!) was later added, and the church has been lovingly restored over the centuries. Despite changes, parts of the original Norman structure remain, making it a true medieval treasure. 🎬 Silver Screen Star: This ancient beauty has starred in "Sherlock," "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Transformers," and more!
