London Exhibition | RA’s Victor Hugo
💕 A while back, I received a magazine from the Royal Academy and saw that their new exhibition was about Victor Hugo. I didn’t even flip through it. On a whim, I decided to check out the exhibition, only to realize once inside that it was about the writer Hugo! 💕 It took a few paintings to sink in, but I soon realized that Hugo was also an incredible artist. With just a few strokes of ink and some well-placed white space, he could bring vivid, story-filled scenes to life on paper. The exhibition featured many manuscripts, and most of the works were simply in dark brown ink on paper, with only a few pieces having simple splashes of color. The gallery was designed to be dimly lit to match the style of the works, with warm lighting highlighting the pieces. 💕 Almost all the paintings were in dark ink, but Hugo was a master at using white space to create light and shadow. The lighting in the gallery was particularly effective, making several pieces appear as if they were glowing. Most of the paintings were small in size, yet they conveyed a grandeur, with a touch of moody surrealism and futurism (hard to describe). It really felt like the work of someone who wrote Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. 💕 Once again, I was amazed by how versatile Hugo was. If he were alive today, he’d probably be a multi-talented artist, combining directing, screenwriting, set design, and illustration. 💕 Every exhibition at the Royal Academy is such a pleasant surprise. Enjoying art on a sunny day makes you feel alive, but then the thought of going back to work makes it all feel a bit bleak… #RA #victorhugo #LondonExhibition
