This icon is certainly no exception. Famous for its unique appearance, the Chicken Boy sculpture sometimes feels like our very own Eiffel Tower or Statue of Liberty. From rooftop oddity to L.A. legend -------------------------------------- The statue, now known as Chicken Boy, first saw the light of day in the late 1960s, when the DTLA fast‐food restaurant “Chicken Boy Fried Chicken” commissioned a giant fiberglass figure to sit atop its roof on Broadway between 4th and 5th Streets. Originally, the body was a standard “Muffler Man” figure, but it was customized with a chicken‐head and a bucket instead of the usual muffler or axe. When the restaurant closed in 1984 following the owner’s death, Chicken Boy was removed from display and placed into storage. Years later, local artist Amy Inouye took custody of the figure and, after nearly two decades of negotiation and bureaucracy, installed it on her studio rooftop on North Figueroa Street in Highland Park in October 2007. Chicken Boy, a local celebrity ---------------------------------- Believe it or not, Chicken Boy has its own film. Released in 1991, it aired on local TV, and a friend of mine used to own it on VHS. Thanks to modern tech, the full 23-minute short is now on YouTube. Heads-up: it’s pure early 90s humor, so buckle up for some nostalgic quirks... Chicken Boy’s long-standing presence and quirky charm make him almost as iconic in L.A. as the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Statue of Liberty in New York. In 2010, he was officially honored with the Governor’s Historic Preservation Award for his cultural significance. 📍5558 N Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90042 Source: https://secretlosangeles.com/chicken-boy-statue-los-angeles/
