Los Angeles' Delicious Fried Chicken Spot! 🍗✨

There’s only one person running the whole show here – a 73-year-old Korean man who’s the chef, the server, the cashier, and the owner. The shop’s name, Gol Tong, means “stubborn” in Korean – a nickname he got back when he worked as a film director. 🎬 He came to LA in the 1990s, made a lot of money running a karaoke lounge, returned to Korea in glory, and jumped into the film industry. He directed three Korean movies in a row – and all of them flopped at the box office… 💸 After burning through his savings, he finally realized, “I knew nothing about making movies.” 😅 He noticed that even fried chicken didn’t taste good when he was feeling down, so he started developing his own fried chicken recipe and created a unique fruit-fried chicken method. In 2017, he brought his recipe back to LA and started selling chicken from a basement. Now he’s moved out of the basement and has his own fried chicken brand – but he still runs everything alone. The chicken comes in only three flavors: original, spicy, and fruit. Everything else on the menu is just creatively named fillers – like “Director’s Fried Chicken,” which is basically a three-flavor combo. 🍽️ We ordered the original + fruit fried chicken combo. And wow, there were so many fruits! 🥭🍒🍓 Mango, raspberry, cherry, strawberry – over a dozen kinds. I almost wondered if he’d bought a bunch of discounted fruits from the market that day – all kinds of random stuff. The avocado was a bit discolored, but the rest were hard to judge – just two or three pieces of each fruit. It felt like “today’s market surplus fruit fried chicken,” kinda like my mom’s weekend fried rice: “whatever’s left in the fridge” style. 😂 There are three sauces: chili-soy vinegar water, mango sauce, and plum sweet-spicy sauce. The chicken was crispy outside and tender inside. Whenever it felt too heavy, a bite of the discounted fruit balanced it out with sweet and sour flavors – pretty tasty overall! 🥢 Before we even finished, a line had formed outside, and the small shop was packed. The walls were covered with posters from the films he directed (erotic horror movies about women possessed by ghosts turning into killers…). Not sure why he chose to make those back in the day, but the actress was indeed very beautiful. 🎞️👻 After the meal, the old man walked us to the door. That’s when I noticed his glove was torn, with his thumb sticking out. 😬 But hey, fried chicken is cooked at high heat, so it’s probably fine, right? Anyway, wishing the grandpa happiness every day! 💛 Have you ever tried fruit-topped fried chicken? What’s the most unique fried chicken flavor you’ve ever had?
