Lyon French Restaurant Recommendation: Chez Grand-Mère

In a nutshell: A distinctive, tasty Lyon restaurant well worth a try. Name and address at the end~ Tucked away in Lyon’s Old Town, the restaurant is just steps from Lyon Cathedral ⛪️ and the funicular 🚠 that climbs the hill. It’s small but cozy, with most seating in the basement—where there’s no phone signal. This means no scrolling during meals, just good conversation with friends. For dining, I recommend the set menu: €24.9 for an appetizer, main course, and dessert. Appetizers Salade Lyonnaise 🥗 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Lyon’s signature salad, featuring a soft-boiled egg, croutons, and smoked meat. Here, the smoked meat is perfectly pan-fried, infusing its rich, savory flavor into every bite of the salad. Soupe à l’oignon 🥘 🧅 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: A delicious onion soup, best enjoyed with a side of bread. Main Courses Andouillette ⭐️⭐️⭐️: A Lyon specialty— a sausage made from various offal, served with Tartiflette (🥔 + 🧀). Admittedly, it has a strong gaminess, but Lyon is one of the few French cities where offal is celebrated. It’s worth trying for the local flair. (Despite the 3 stars, it’s still a must-try!) Coq au vin 🐔 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Red wine-braised chicken. The meat is tender and (generous in size), with a subtle wine aroma, paired with hearty chunks of potato—delightful. Paleron de boeuf confit 🥩 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Confit beef shoulder, slow-cooked to tenderness, also served with Tartiflette. It’s not particularly unique, but still very tasty. Desserts 🍮 Paire pochée au vin rouge 🍐 🍷 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Red wine-poached pears. Highly recommended! Pears simmered slowly in red wine with spices and sugar, absorbing the wine’s aroma and deep hue—absolutely wonderful. Île flottante aux pralines ⭐️⭐️: Literally “floating island”—a meringue-like mound floating in a condensed milk-style sauce. It’s not bad, but pales in comparison to the poached pears. Café ☕ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: If you’re not craving dessert, the coffee is a solid choice, served with 4 tiny pastries. Overall, this is a fantastic Lyon spot. Book ahead to avoid missing out on a table.
