Mandatory Evacuation Orders Are Issued For L.A. And Ventura Counties Due To The Canyon Fire
A brush fire that sparked due to the sweltering heatwave this week in Southern California has now escalated to mandatory evacuation orders for many in L.A. and Ventura counties. The Canyon Fire broke out early Thursday afternoon east of Lake Piru in Ventura County, where temperatures were nearing 100 degrees. The Canyon Fire began as a roughly 50-acre blaze but soon exploded in size within hours, quickly spreading to more than 4,800 acres. The L.A. County Fire Department’s most current update reports 0% fire containment. Evacuation Orders and Warnings ------------------------------ More than 4,200 people in both Los Angeles and Ventura counties are currently under mandatory evacuation orders. Authorities also ordered evacuations for the Lake Piru Recreation Area and portions of the surrounding region, while issuing evacuation warnings for a handful of ranches at the far western edge of Holser Canyon. You can find the full list of areas under evacuation at the L.A. County Emergency website here. Four Current SoCal Wildfires ---------------------------- The Canyon Fire is one of at least four burning on Thursday in Southern California along with the Gold Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest, Gifford Fire in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, and the Rosa Fire the San Bernardino National Forest. Details about the cause of these blazes are not available at this time. Water-dropping aircraft , including an airtanker, dropped water on the Canyon Fire flames Thursday as triple-digit heat, low humidity, and 25 mph gusts fueled the fire’s advance. In order to refill the water-dropping aircraft, firefighters used Lake Piru, a reservoir located in Los Padres National Forest northwest of Los Angeles.
