Maryhill Museum: The Most Isolated Art Gallery
The art gallery is located in the Columbia River Gorge, one of the most beautiful places in the world. I share the same view as the museum's founder, Sam Hill, on this (the beauty of the gorge will be praised another time). The museum is named after Sam's wife, Mary. Standing on the museum's platform, you can have a panoramic view of the beautiful scenery of the gorge. The museum is closed in winter and is now open! 😀 The permanent exhibitions include #Rodin (the museum has more than 80 Rodin works), such as The Thinker, The Hand of God, The Age of Bronze, and a life - size plaster cast of Eve from The Gates of Hell; #Native American art; more than 80 sets of chess sets showing the cultures and arts of various countries in the world (very interesting); the private collection and personal items donated by Queen Mary of Romania; the Fashion Theater showing French high - fashion after World War II, and so on. 😀 It is about 100 miles to drive up the river from Portland. It takes 2 hours to take Highway 84, passing through Hood River and The Dalles. You can also take Highway 14 on the #Washington state side. Because it is far from big cities and the traffic is inconvenient, when the museum opened to the public in 1940, it was called the most isolated #art museum in the world. 😀 There is also a Maryhill Loop here. It has 25 curves rising 850 feet, with 8 of them being sharp turns and a slope of 5%. Those who like to drive on mountain roads can have a try. Check in advance whether it is closed for use as a race track. This 10 - mile road was built by the museum's founder, Sam Hill, at his own expense of 100,000 US dollars over three years. Sam dedicated his life to the road construction in Washington state and Oregon state. The old scenic road, which is still the best route to visit the Columbia River Gorge, was built under his promotion. Hill also participated in the construction of the Pacific Highway (Highway 99, the main north - south route through #Oregon and Washington state), the coastal Highway 101, and the road to #Crater Lake. 😀 There is another project left by Sam Hill in this area that can be visited together. The Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial is to commemorate the World War I casualties in Klickitat County, Washington state. 😀 #Off - the - beaten - path Attractions #Museum Recommendations #Portland Tourism
