Michigan Hidden Loop | Day 2: Grand Rapids
Michigan Hidden Loop | Day 2: Grand Rapids (Part 2) – A Zoo with Chinese Vibes That’s Too Cute to Leave! 🦒 Continuing our Michigan hidden loop journey! For the second half of Day 2, we set our sights on John Ball Zoo on the west side of Grand Rapids. As a "seasoned zoo lover" who never misses a zoo wherever I go, I originally went with a "just a quick look" mindset—but I was so surprised as soon as I walked in that I stayed until closing time and still didn’t want to leave! If you love nature, animals, or traveling with kids, this spot definitely deserves a spot on Grand Rapids’ "must-visit list"! 📍 First, Let’s Talk Basics: Super Friendly Transportation & Size! John Ball Zoo is incredibly easy to find—it’s on the west side of Grand Rapids, directly accessible via I-196. After getting off the highway, it’s just a few more minutes’ drive, and the parking lot is spacious and easy to park in—no worrying about "finding a parking space" at all! 🚗 The entire zoo covers about 100 acres (roughly the size of over 90 football fields), so it’s not a huge "walk-till-your-feet-ache" zoo, but it makes up for it with a compact layout and a rich variety of animals—over 2,000 species in total! From rainforest monkeys and parrots to African savanna giraffes and zebras, to native North American bison, and even super cute little penguins, you’ll get to meet tons of "animal friends" in one visit—great value for money! ✨ The Biggest Surprise: Chinese-Style Decor Everywhere in the Zoo! 🏮 I thought it would just be a regular city zoo, but I was shocked as soon as I walked through the gate: the place was filled with bright, colorful lantern decorations! Red lanterns, lantern sets shaped like Chinese zodiac animals, and "star lights" wrapped around tree branches—walking through the zoo felt like stepping into a Chinese Lantern Festival. It was so heartwarming! 🥰 Later, I asked a staff member and found out these decorations had been up since the Lantern Festival and were kept there ever since. They’re already festive during the day, but if you stay until night when all the lights turn on, it’ll be a "full-on holiday vibe"—the photos would be amazing! 📸 My friend and I kept saying as we walked: seeing such strong Chinese elements in a Michigan zoo was really unexpected and touching~ 🐾 Those "Wow-Worthy" Animal Moments! Even though the zoo isn’t super big, every corner has little heartwarming details—especially the animals, who are just too cute and "chill" for words! 1. The Lazy Gorilla: "Chilling" Is Its Middle Name! 🦍 When we got to the primate area, we were laughing out loud at a gorilla—it was lying spread-eagled on a tree branch, one hand resting on its head and the other hanging loosely, eyes half-open like it was saying, "Don’t bother me even if the sky falls." Its chill vibe was next-level! The baby gorillas next to it were jumping around, but it didn’t move at all—it was just like me on weekends when I don’t want to work 😂 We watched it for a long time outside the fence, and even our own pace slowed down—all our worries melted away. 2. Pettable Lambs: A Dream for Families & Animal Lovers! 🐑 The zoo has a special "open interaction area" with a group of fluffy little lambs. Kids can feed them with feed given by staff and even gently pet their wool~ The lambs are super docile—they’ll nudge your hand when they see you, and their fluffy fur feels so soft! Even though I’m a "big kid," I couldn’t help but feed them a few handfuls. Watching their cheeks puff up as they chewed the feed made my heart melt~ If you’re traveling with kids, this is definitely a "kid-can-play-here-all-afternoon" gem, and parents can take a break too—it’s a win-win! 💡 Zoo Visit Tips: Make Your Experience Even Better! Wear comfortable shoes! Even though the zoo isn’t huge, you’ll still walk for 2-3 hours—sneakers or casual shoes are the most comfortable~ Bring snacks and water! The zoo has restaurants, but they’re a bit pricey. Bring some cookies or fruit, and when you’re tired, sit on a bench for a bite—it’s so cozy~ Leave enough time! It’s best to enter before 2 PM—you’ll have time to see the animals slowly and catch the "sunset light" in the evening, which makes photos more atmospheric~ If you’re visiting Grand Rapids, don’t just focus on gardens and beaches! Spend half a day at John Ball Zoo—watch the lazy gorilla, pet the fluffy lambs, and enjoy the Chinese-style lanterns. You’ll definitely leave with tons of joy! Thanks to this zoo, Day 2 of our hidden loop trip became unforgettable~ #Michigan#MichiganTravel#GrandRapids#HiddenTravelSpots#Zoo#TravelGuide
