My Half-Day Solo Trip to Memphis
After that, I headed downtown. Since it was around 2 PM on a weekday, the streets were almost empty. The sky was overcast ☁️, the buildings looked a bit worn, there was some litter, and the neon signs weren’t very bright. I was the only Asian girl walking around—just a few White tourists and Black locals here and there. Someone was playing with a remote-control truck, which was fun to watch 🚚. The overall vibe was lonely and slightly bleak—though I bet it gets livelier at night. I’ll be honest: walking alone there felt unsettling. There were hardly any people or even cars around. I originally planned to walk 13 minutes to a famous BBQ spot, but ended up driving because I didn’t feel safe. And wow—the ribs were totally worth it! 🍖🔥 The place was called Central BBQ - Downtown. The ribs were crispy outside, tender inside, and super juicy. A bit pricey, but so flavorful. Overall, Memphis felt a bit underwhelming for solo exploration. There isn’t a ton to do, and safety was always in the back of my mind. Seeing the famous Beale Street so quiet and empty made me a little sad… but I can imagine how vibrant it must be at night with music and crowds. Not sure if I’d recommend going alone again, but I’m glad I gave it a chance 🌟. #StudyInUS #InternationalStudents #SoloTravel #TravelUSA #Memphis #SolofemaleTravel
