National treasure of Ceylon!
🍏The Tooth Relic symbolizes royal power: Wherever the Tooth Relic is, the capital is there. 🍐Thus, Kandy is also regarded as the spiritual capital of Ceylon. 🍊The Temple of the Tooth Relic was built on the site of the ancient Kandy Kingdom's royal palace. Many Sri Lankans wear all white to pay their respects. 🟡️ The outer perimeter of the temple is a simple and sacred white wall, while the interior is quite different. The central hall has two floors, elaborately carved with wood, lacquer, and ivory. 🍋The ceiling is covered with paintings and gold ornaments, making it worthy of being called Kandy's art museum. 🟡️ Passing through the restored murals from the ancient Kandy Kingdom era, you'll reach the golden stupa that enshrines the Buddha's Tooth Relic. 🍉 The murals depict how a prince and princess from ancient India brought the Tooth Relic to Sri Lanka. 🟡️ The exquisitely carved wooden structure on the north side of the main hall is the Royal Audience Hall, where the king met with ministers and handled daily administrative affairs. 🟡️ The golden stupa housing the Tooth Relic only opens during the three daily ceremonies (5:30 / 9:30 / 18:30), during which there will be performances . 🥥After watching the performance, go upstairs to see the relic casket. 🤞 Be sure to follow the locals and line up to go up the left side of the stairs to get a close view of the casket. 🍊You can arrive at the temple between 7:30 and 9:00 in the morning. 🍑At this time, the locals who attended the first ceremony have gradually left, and tourists haven't arrived yet. It's a great time to take photos with good lighting. 🥝Arrive around 9:15 to get the best photo spot and observe the daily religious practices of the locals. 👒 OOTD You can try Sri Lanka's national costume, the sari, or wear all white. ⏰️ Opening hours: 8:30~18:30 👛 Ticket price: 2000 LKR 🌶About the Tooth Relic Two Tooth Relics were left after the Buddha's nirvana. 🌽One is kept in this temple and is regarded as a national treasure of Sri Lanka. Every July and August, a grand festival is held, during which the Buddha's relic is taken out for people to pay homage. ‼️ TIPs 🥔- To enter the temple, both men and women must wear skirts/pants that cover the knees; shoulders must not be exposed, and hats are not allowed. 🍆You need to take off your shoes and enter either barefoot or in socks!
