Nishi Hongan-ji Temple(2)

Spatial Layout and Lighting Design 🌟 🍃🌸 Visitors gradually enter the underground lobby along a ramp, with light streaming down through the skylights, keeping the space bright and airy despite being underground. Continuing from the lobby, one descends along a wide grand staircase into the core area—a dome - shaped audio - visual hall resembling a pudding. 🍃🌸 Constructed with reinforced concrete, the hall's surface is treated with a special hammering technique, giving the architecture a unique textural feel. Takamatsu Shin paid special attention to the use of light in underground spaces during the design. To allow natural light to fully penetrate, the building features a light court (a courtyard of light) and multiple lighting devices. 🍃🌸 As viewers step into this underground world, they don't feel oppressed. Instead, they can enjoy the charm of light and shadow changes in a tranquil atmosphere. ▪️ Functionality and Cultural Heritage 🍃🌸The design of the new reception hall is not limited to the traditional religious functions of a temple but also includes diverse modern uses. The core facility, the Shinshu Hongwan Audio - Visual Hall, can accommodate 346 people and is equipped with the most advanced multimedia devices to support a variety of related activities. #Kyoto 🌇🌿
