One Of L.A.’s Oldest Theaters Is Also The Only Place In The U.S. Still Showing Panoramas
Step back in time and completely immerse yourself in a unique art form from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Velaslavasay Panorama in Los Angeles is a unique cultural space that revives the historic art of the panorama. (Panoramas are massive 360-degree painted scenes that once captivated audiences before the invention of film.) The Velaslavasay Panorama is the only place in the United States still showing panoramas in a cinema setting. This historic theater is truly the last of its kind. Today, the venue not only preserves this rare art form but also reimagines it by hosting performances, films, exhibitions, and other immersive experiences. With its blend of history, art, and experimentation, the Panorama offers visitors a chance to step into another world while exploring both the past and the possibilities of visual storytelling. What is a panorama? ------------------- A panorama is a massive 360-degree circular painting that completely surrounds the viewer, making them feel like they’ve stepped right into the scene. To make the illusion even more convincing, artists often added three-dimensional faux terrain at the base of the painting, blending real space with painted space. Long before the invention of films, panoramas offered audiences a completely immersive form of entertainment, similar to the way movies immerse and entertain us today. 25th Anniversary Celebration ---------------------------- In September 2025, the Velaslavasay Panorama celebrates its 25th anniversary as the only 360-degree panorama viewing hall on the West Coast. The month also marks the 115th anniversary of its home, the Union Theatre – Los Angeles’ oldest purpose-built movie theater still in operation. With its striking neon façade, glowing orange globe, and shimmering aquamarine tiles, the Union Theatre remains a jewel among L.A.’s many cinema landmarks. To mark these milestones, visitors are invited to enjoy a behind-the-scenes presentation, refreshments in the garden, and special commemorative keepsakes. These events are in collaboration with the California Preservation Foundation in honor of the 4th Annual Doors Open California. This is a statewide celebration offering exclusive, behind‐the‐scenes access to California’s most fascinating historic places.
