Portland feels like a cozier, slower-paced version of Boston 🏙️. It might seem remote and rustic, but it’s just as charming (and just as white as Seattle 😅). With its New England history and a touch of that classic “patronizing decency,” it’s balanced by a laid-back vibe and friendly, uncompetitive locals. Must-Do’s & Must-Sees 🌄 Mt. Washington ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ At 6,288 ft, the views are stunning! 🍂 Below mid-mountain: lush forests (perfect in October!). Above: rocky terrain, grand peaks, and dramatic New England clouds ☁️. You can drive up or hike! Portland Lighthouses ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Only Portland Head Light is worth it — the other two are basically wetland-park level 😂. Plus, the Bite Into Maine food truck here is AMAZING! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Their lobster roll isn’t drowned in sauce — you actually taste the fresh lobster! 🦞 Food Highlights 🍽️ Duckfat ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Duckfat fries: basic, but the black truffle ketchup (even if it’s probably truffle flavoring + ketchup) is delicious 😏. Duckfat Caesar salad: smoked duck was underwhelming 😬… but the salad itself with egg yolk, vinegar, Caesar dressing, and breadcrumbs? 5⭐! Maine Blueberries ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A local specialty — eat all you can! 🫐 Try the blueberry sparkling water (local exclusive at Hannaford supermarket). Avoid the “honey” one — twice the price and weirdly bad 😭. Gorgeous Gelato ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Especially the Mokaccino — coffee base with chocolate chips + a hint of liquor = perfect balance! ☕🍫 ISF Trading ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ $28 for fresh, delicious uni (sea urchin)! Stick to just the uni though. Skip These ❌ Holy Donut 🙅 Tastes like gas station glaze-on-bread… way too sweet and basic. Standard Baking Co 🙅 Just a very average, not-that-tasty bakery. Not terrible, but not worth the hype. Tandem Coffee and Bakery 🙅 Blueberry pie had underbaked phyllo dough 😑 Pecan almond pie used coconut instead of butter — oily, not crispy or flavorful.
