Prince Edward Island
A Trip from Halifax to Charlottetown, PEI during the Labor Day Long Weekend in September Before starting the trip, it’s highly recommended to rent a car through Costco. The prices there are cheaper than on the official websites. If you don’t have other discount codes, Costco is worth checking out. Reservations can be canceled for free, and you pay at the rental agency on the day of pickup. You can use a non-MasterCard credit card for payment. If you have a credit card that includes rental car insurance, you can decline the insurance offered by the rental agency to save some money! The drive is approximately 3.5 hours and 320 km. You can take a ferry or cross the bridge. Since I didn’t look into the ferry option, I chose the bridge directly. When leaving the island via the bridge, a toll of $50.25 will be charged, but there’s no fee to enter the island. Accommodation was at Delta Hotels Prince Edward, part of the Marriott group. Since it was early September and the summer season was coming to an end, the prices had dropped. The hotel’s location and environment are excellent, so it’s highly recommended. Marriott Platinum members and above can enjoy a free breakfast, choosing between a buffet or an à la carte option. As shown in Picture 3 🍚🍔, we didn’t go to many restaurants on the island. The only one worth mentioning is Richard‘s Fresh Seafood, which comes highly recommended. Their signature dish is the lobster roll at $29.95. Although the price is quite high, the portion is really large and worth every penny. Nowadays, the price of lobster rolls at other restaurants is similar, but the portions are not necessarily as big as here. We also ordered fried scallops, which were good! All these dishes come with fries by default, and the portion of fries is large. If you’re ordering two or more sets, you can ask them to skip the fries and save $4! How can you visit PEI without going tide pooling? Due to time constraints, we only went to Tea Hill Beach, arriving around 4:30 PM during low tide. We bought a shovel and a bucket at Dollarama. When we got there, there were quite a few people digging, but almost all of them were razor clams—I didn’t see any other clams or shellfish. Our harvest is shown in Picture 4. In the end, we released the crabs and other seafood back into the sea. We simply boiled the razor clams with a little wine and ginger. The whole razor clams had only a tiny bit of sand, so they tasted really fresh and sweet! Other attractions include Anne of Green Gables’ House and taking photos by the seaside. There’s also Cow‘s Ice Cream (which is also available in Halifax). By the way, the souvenirs at Anne of Green Gables’ House are quite expensive—my partner spent a few dozen dollars, haha. There’s also PEI’s signature small red soda, as shown in Picture 6 (a web image)—it’s worth a try. Overall, PEI is great, but it’s very small with no high-rise buildings 🏢, which is completely understandable. For residents in the East, it’s a great summer getaway! Finally, if you go tide pooling by the sea, be sure to stay safe ⚠️ and watch out for bites—I got bitten by mosquitoes! #PEI #PrinceEdwardIsland #CanadaTravel #LaborDayGetawayGuide #NorthAmericaTravel
