✨ Sam Gilliam: The Color of Folds ✨
📍 David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles 🕰️ September 13, 2025 – October 11, 2025 💡 - This exhibition features Sam Gilliam’s small-scale works from 1978–1981, created using folded handmade paper, layered watercolors, and collages. - I was drawn to this show not only because Sam Gilliam is one of America’s most important African American abstract artists, but also because of his incredibly designed art books—the fold-out details are so creative and fascinating! - If there’s one thing missing, it’s that the gallery focused mostly on smaller two-dimensional works. I wish there were more large draped canvas pieces (like the one in P7) that showcase his iconic sculptural presence and interaction with space. 🌙 About the Artist - Sam Gilliam is renowned for his revolutionary approach to “deconstructing the canvas”—removing it from the frame, dyeing, folding, and draping it in dynamic installations. His past exhibition images are breathtaking! If another show of his comes to LA, I’ll be first in line. - Did you know? Sam Gilliam was the first Black artist to represent the United States with a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale (1972)! His works are held in the collections of major institutions like MoMA, Tate, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Met. 🏛 Gallery Introduction - David Kordansky Gallery was founded in 2003 by David Kordansky and is located in Los Angeles. The space was redesigned by the acclaimed architecture firm wHY and now represents over 40 international contemporary artists working in abstraction, conceptual art, installation, photography, and more. It’s one of the most dynamic contemporary art galleries in LA! - Also—don’t miss the playful installations and sculptures at the entrance. They add such a fun vibe to the visit!
