Santa Monica Mountains Day Trip Diary 🌄✨
The Santa Monica Mountains are located between Los Angeles and Thousand Oaks—by zip code, they actually belong to Thousand Oaks! 🏞️ It’s about a 40-minute drive from Downtown LA and is one of the natural conservation areas along the West Coast. 🚗💨 We saw a specimen of a Bobcat (a wildcat native to the area) at the small museum in the Visitor Center—and it even appears on their souvenir magnets! 🐾🧲 We drove from Irvine to Thousand Oaks in the morning. Due to traffic, it took nearly two hours with all the stops and starts. The wind had dried the grasses on the hills to a golden yellow, and the silence and stillness felt almost surreal. Being out in nature like this really makes you feel more alive. 🌾🧡 Thanks to the coastal climate near the Pacific and the diverse terrain of the Santa Monica Mountains, this area is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts. 🥾🌿 There are numerous hiking trails, including Solstice Canyon, Circle X Ranch, Zuma Canyon, Sandstone Peak, and more. 📌 Important tips: 1️⃣ Download offline maps on your phone before you go. Apps like AllTrails or Gaia are super helpful! 📱🗺️ 2️⃣ If you’re into photography, bring a lightweight camera—no need for heavy gear. During this winter-spring transition, the mountains aren’t very green yet, with dried grasses dominating the view. April might be a better time for lush scenery. 📸🍂 3️⃣ Bring trekking poles! They help reduce pressure on your feet during long hikes and make it easier to finish the trail. For safety, make sure to head down before it gets dark. 🌅 4️⃣ Keep it simple—don’t overpack. The less clutter, the better the hike! 🎒 💖 Visitor Center: You can get stamps, take photos, and explore the small museum here. I bought a rubber fridge magnet with a Bobcat set against the lush backdrop of the Santa Monica Mountains. 🧩🏔️ There’s also a Spanish-style building behind it—perfect for sitting back on a lounge chair and soaking in the views. That said, January might not be the ideal time to visit. The winter winds are strong, and the mountains haven’t turned green yet. 🌬️❄️ 📍 Address: 26876 Mulholland Hwy, Calabasas, CA 91302 Have you explored the Santa Monica Mountains?
