SD|First-Time Kayaking & Unexpected Whale & Sea Lion Encounters 🐳🦭
For sisters who want to try kayaking, La Jolla's Kayak Tour is a must! Not only do you get to learn about San Diego’s marine ecosystem, but you also get to see sea lions and pelicans—and on our way back, we even spotted two whales! So incredibly lucky! The entire tour lasts about 90 minutes. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to get fitted with life jackets + helmets and lock up your belongings. Our slot was at 4:20 PM, so we walked from the shop to the beach at 4 PM. The guide first taught us paddling techniques and emergency signals onshore before escorting each kayak into the water. The waves that day were HUGE! With zero experience, we flipped on our first attempt 🤦. The coach was super supportive—she let us rest and try again. Despite her petite frame, she cheered us on: "I’ll push you as far as I can!" 😹 On our second try, we kept hearing "PADDLE! PADDLE!" from behind until we finally broke through the waves. A distant "GOOD JOB!" later, we reunited with the group—such a rewarding feeling! Once past the shallows, the waves calmed down, and we paddled to La Jolla Cave. High tide kept us from entering, but that just means we’ll have to come back!
