SF’s Conservatory of Flowers Is The Oldest Wood And Glass Conservatory In North America — And You Can Visit For Free Next Week

The Conservatory of Flowers is a landmark building in San Francisco known for its beautiful architecture. If you haven’t had the chance to visit yet, you’ve probably seen numerous pictures of the beautiful building surrounded by manicured lawns with thriving flower beds in Golden Gate Park. The building, built in 1879, is also the oldest glass and wood conservatory in North America. The conservatory is typically free for San Francisco residents , but if you’re visiting, you can enjoy it for free next Tuesday, November 4th. The conservatory, along with numerous other museums in San Francisco have monthly free admission days, typically within the first week or two of the month. Other museums with free admission for non-residents include the SFMOMA, de Young, Asian Art Museum , and more. The SF Conservatory of Flowers is known for its rare and tropical plant collection , including a gallery filled with pools of aquatic plants . You can also expect to explore plants from the highland and lowland tropics, along with a gallery filled with potted plants. Unfortunately, the West Gallery is closed until November 14 for renovations, but you can still expect to see plenty of beautiful plants on your visit The Conservatory is located in Golden Gate Park, just a short walk from Eastern entrance of the park. On a sunny day you can see people enjoying picnics on the manicured lawns, and running JFK Promenade which is closed to cars. You can also work further into the park for a few minutes and find the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Science, along with the Bandshell which frequently hosts free concerts.
