This place is joyful inside and out and one of the last remaining pure representations of San Francisco. it is inexpensive to gain entry and even if you don't go in it is delightful from the outside. inside, be ready for a slightly humid experience because it is, after all, a working Greenhouse with thousands of plants being grown inside. it is simply delightful and I believe once every few years they have the death plant blooming which is an entire party unto itself.
if you are lucky enough to be around in the summer you don't even have to go inside to get an eyeful of amazement. since 2016, marking the 50th anniversary of The Summer of Love, there has been an unbeatable Outdoors light show, all summer, every night. I highly recommend it. it is gorgeous and completely worthwhile and free. don't be afraid to roam the park at night. it is one of the last San Francisco enjoyment that is still free and fun to do with your friends. There is some disabled parking in the front and there are parking lots to the side there are bathrooms on either side of the conservatory.

Read moreI wouldn’t drive all the way out of SF just to see this place, but if you’re in the city and you enjoy plants and nature this place is definitely worth stopping by!
Straight off the bat if you have little kids I’d avoid coming here. You are not allowed to touch the plants and only allowed to look at them. If your kids are more of a hands on sort of person this is not an ideal place for them. If they do enjoy taking their time and enjoying different plants and have self control them this place shouldn’t be an issue for them.
Although it is relatively small, it is packed with various different tropical plants that you might not commonly see regularly. There are many interesting carnivorous plants as well as orchids and tropical flowers. You can get through all of the different parts of the conservatory in 30 minutes or so at the fastest if you take a small glance at each of the plants, and 40 minutes to maybe an hour or so if you take your time and take pictures of plants, etc.
Who would enjoy this: plant connoisseurs (variety of plants and uncommon ones which plant nerds would appreciate) people who like nature and really taking time and looking at pretty and small things older more elderly people people who like to take aesthetic photos
People who I think should avoid this place: children people who are not interested in nature or spending time looking at small pretty things
Overall for the cost of the ticket $10 for adults and $7 for teens and college students (cheaper for elderly and residents of SF) I think this place is worth stopping by and going to once. I wouldn’t mind coming back to show friends who are...
Read moreWhen you first walk into the conservatory you’re hit with the warm balmy air, a heady fragrance of earth, the sounds of birds and tree frogs chirping, and the deep shadows of the leafy canopies of a rainforest. This immersive moment is so beautiful, it makes you wonder why attractions like this have become so rare.
As you pass through each of the five zones of the conservatory you find a variety of experiences that enhance the wide array of flora and fauna. Placards mark notable specimens, and call out interesting facts about the foliage. In this way, any plant lover is sure to discover even more about their foliate friends. The interesting plantings, and containers are also worth paying attention to, especially as one passes through the section of potted plants.
Personally, what always draws my interest is the weird stuff. The carnivorous plant collection I find particularly exciting and different, as they are not something you come across too often in other settings, if ever. The HUGE lilly pads are also one of my favorites. I remember reading about them as a kid, lilly pads large enough to hold an adult as they float down a river... these would certainly fit the bill! The aquatic plant area houses all kinds of weird and interesting plant life that is sure to excite anyone who...
