Sri lanka travel guide--kandy
🏰 The sacred city of Kandy, once the capital of Sri Lanka, is also the second-largest city in the country, with a mountainous terrain and a comfortable climate. ✅ Must-visit attractions in Kandy: 1️⃣ Temple of the Tooth Established in the 15th century, the Temple of the Tooth is a sacred and solemn pilgrimage site for Buddhism, as revered as the Potala Palace is to Tibetans. The temple houses the tooth relic of Sakyamuni Buddha, a national treasure of Sri Lanka. Legend has it that after Sakyamuni's parinirvana and cremation, his relics were distributed to rulers across various regions for veneration, primarily in the northern mountains of India. The tooth relic was enshrined in India for eight centuries before being hidden in the elaborate coiffure of an Indian princess, who evaded inspections and brought it all the way to Sri Lanka, where it is now stored in the inner sanctum of the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. 2️⃣ Royal Botanic Gardens The Royal Botanic Gardens, known as one of the best tropical botanical gardens in the world and the largest in Asia, covers over 60 hectares. The garden was originally established in 1371 AD and served as the royal garden for the Kandyan kings. The air is fresh, and the plants are particularly gigantic, even the bamboo is super-sized. Many monkeys play in the trees, completely unafraid of strangers. There is also a tree planted by Premier Zhou Enlai; interested visitors can try to find it. 3️⃣ Kandy Lake Located in the center of Kandy, a city in central Sri Lanka and a holy site for Buddhism, Kandy Lake is a massive artificial lake dug out of paddy fields and is one of the city's most famous tourist attractions. The lake is home to many species of birds, including Indian cormorants, egrets, storks, and pelicans, making it a great place for walks or jogs. 4️⃣ Sky Tower The Ambuluwawa Tower is part of the Ambuluwawa Temple. The structure appears to have seven levels, each representing different Buddhist concepts. In addition to the tower, there are other places in the temple worth visiting. The staircase to the top is narrow, becoming increasingly tighter as you ascend, with some sections requiring one to sidle through. Due to the tower's single-file design, how do people passing each other manage to "pass"? #Sky Tower#Kandy Lake#Temple of the Tooth#Royal Botanic Gardens#Sri lanka#travel guide# trip diary
