The Bode Museum in Berlin | Set of “The Queen’s Gambit”
📍 Among Berlin’s many museums, the Bode Museum is not the most popular. But if you’re a fan of TV series, you’ll instantly recognize it as the setting for the scenes of Beth’s international chess tournament in the hit miniseries “The Queen’s Gambit.” ♟️ Following in Beth’s footsteps, we approach this museum building, constructed in 1904. The magnificent dome hall is bright and spacious, with towering bronze sculptures standing majestically in the center (P2). Ascending the stairs, from the steps to the café terrace, this is where Beth would often grab a coffee during breaks in the competition (P1). If you continue through the hall, you’ll see the elegant, gray-toned art gallery where Beth walked, in a space that’s monochromatic except for her vibrant presence, a lone warrior advancing on the tournament stage (P3). 🏛️ In the series, the tournament takes place in 1967. On and off-screen, the Bode Museum stands as a testament to the grace and classic charm of the last century. 📜 The Bode Museum, located at the western end of Berlin’s Museum Island, is primarily a Neobaroque-style building. It was built from 1897 to 1904 by architect Ernst von Ihne and was originally named the “Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum.” In 1956, it was renamed to honor the art historian Wilhelm von Bode for his contributions to the museum’s development. ☕️ The domed entrance hall is the highlight of the building, with its classic symmetrical design and rich decorative details creating a grand and opulent space. The museum café on the second floor has been dubbed “Berlin’s most beautiful museum café.” 📖 The Bode Museum is not only a jewel of Berlin’s art scene but also a part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List. On the treasure-filled Museum Island, its collection of sculptures, coins, medals, and Byzantine art is unparalleled and awaits visitors. 💡 Practical Information: The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Opening hours from Wednesday to Friday are 10:00-17:00. Weekend opening hours are 10:00-18:00.
