Our first stop on the two - day, one - night self - drive trip to Harrison Hot Springs: The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, aptly named for the magnificent birds it's known for. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a stunning wetland park located along the Vedder River. It's famous for housing one of the largest breeding colonies of Great Blue Herons in British Columbia. Apart from these majestic birds, there's a rich variety of other wildlife here too πΎ. The wetland is situated at the southern end of Sumas Prairie Road in Greendale, and there's no admission fee π. You'll find a visitor center, an observation tower, bird - watching shutters, a gift shop, restrooms, and more than 10 kilometers of walking trails, outdoor classrooms, as well as picnic tables and benches. The hiking trails here are perfect for a family outing, where you can go bird - watching and more... Center Trail: 0.5 km, easy - a wide gravel path. It's a gentle stroll that even the youngest members of the family can enjoy π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦. Heron Colony Loop: 1.2 km, easy - a gravel trail. You'll get up close to the heron colonies and witness their fascinating behavior π. Tower Trail: 0.7 km, leisurely - a mix of gravel, wood chips, and boardwalk paths. This trail offers great views from the observation tower along the way πΌ. Salwein Creek Trail: 0.5 km, easy - a gravel path.
