The Oscars Will Move From ABC To YouTube – The Award Show’s Only Network Jump Since First Airing In 1976

The Academy Awards will soon have a new home. For the first time since the ceremony initially aired on ABC in 1976 , the high-profile award show honoring the world’s best cinema will switch networks to YouTube . This move to the streaming-only platform marks a huge shift. On top of airing the [Oscars](https://secretlosangeles.com/oscar-viewing-parties/) , the deal reportedly includes red carpet preshow coverage, the Oscar nominations announcement, the Governors Awards, the Oscars Nominees Luncheon, the Student Academy Awards ceremony, the Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony, Academy member and filmmaker interviews, film education programs, podcasts, and more. “The Oscars are one of our essential cultural institutions , honoring excellence in storytelling and artistry,” said YouTube CEO Neal Mohan in a statement. “Partnering with the Academy to bring this celebration of art and entertainment to viewers all over the world will inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars’ storied legacy.” The change will begin in 2029. ---------------------------------- Following the airing of the 100th Academy Awards in 2028. The 101st Acadmy Awards ceremony will air on YouTube in 2029 . The four year deal guarantees it will air on YouTube through 2033. According to *Hollywood Reporter*, the deal will also be supported by the Google Arts & Culture initiative, “which will help provide digital access to select exhibitions and programs and help to digitize some of the more than 52 million items that are part of the Academy Collection.” As of now, the ceremony will be free for viewers outside of the US, while American viewers will have to subscribe to YouTube TV.
